Nuclear Stress Test

If your doctor said you need a nuclear stress test, do not worry. This safe test takes pictures of your blood flow when you rest and move, and we can even use a safe chemical stress test if you cannot walk on a treadmill.

You do not have to go to a crowded hospital for your care. At New York Heart and Vascular Care, NYHVC, we offer this same heart nuclear test across our six local clinics in quiet, comfortable offices with clear, flat-rate pricing and fast, simple scheduling.

Expert Doctors

Specialized providers use advanced metabolic tracing to pinpoint exact areas of reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.

What Is a Nuclear Stress Test and Why Is It Done?

This scan mixes a normal workout test with clear pictures to map out blood moving through your heart. If you cannot walk on a treadmill easily, we can do a stress test using chemicals to get the same results.

Doctors usually order this scan if you keep having bad chest pain or trouble catching your breath. The pictures show us if your heart is actually getting enough oxygen when you are moving around during the day.

Two Main Reasons for the Test

Finding blocked arteries

The test reveals whether the main tubes carrying blood to your heart are narrowed or clogged. This helps us catch heart disease early and see exactly how bad a blockage is before it gets worse.

Planning your medical care

If you already take heart pills, this scan proves if they are doing their job. It also shows us how much hard work your heart can handle so we can plan safe daily exercise for you.

Different Names for the Nuclear Stress Test

When you get a referral slip from your doctor, the medical words can look confusing. Doctors use many different names for this same test.

No matter what name is written on your paper, NYHVC has the tools to do it. You do not need to call around to big medical labs to see if they have the right machine. We routinely perform:

Nuclear Cardiac Stress Test

The basic name for this advanced heart scan.

MPI (Myocardial Perfusion Imaging)

A fancy medical term for tracking your blood flow.

Cardiac SPECT or PET Scans

The exact types of high-tech cameras we use to take your heart photos.

Our doctors at New York Heart and Vascular Care perform all these, no matter what your doctor has written on the slip. Bring your slip to any of our six clinics and get your test done fast by our professionals.

Our Heart Stress Test Procedure: Walking or Sitting Down

We know that everyone moves differently. That is why NYHVC has two easy ways to do your heart scan at our local offices. We make sure you are comfortable the whole time.

Option 1: The Treadmill Test

If you can walk without pain, you will do a short workout. First, we put a tiny tube in your arm vein to give you the scan fluid. You lie down while a special camera takes the first pictures. Then, you walk on a treadmill. Once your heart is beating fast, we take the last pictures to check your myocardial perfusion.

Option 2: The Sitting Test

If you have bad knees, arthritis, or find it hard to walk, you do not have to use the treadmill. We can do a chemical stress test instead. You just sit back and relax while we use safe fluids like regadenoson or adenosine to make your heart mimic a workout without you moving at all.

Preparation before the Test Day

There are some important safety measures you should keep in mind before appearing on the test day. To get the best result of your test, try not to take coffee, tea, or even chocolate for at least 24 hours.

Also, please avoid any food or drink except water for 4 to 6 hours before your appointment. Additionally, do not smoke cigarettes for 8 hours before your visit and test. Make sure you wear loose, comfortable clothes and walking shoes or sneakers.

Remember to bring your breathing inhaler along if you use one, and tell our team about your daily pills before you change or stop taking any of them.

Your Test Day: What Happens During Your Scan

Your entire appointment takes about two to three hours at our clinic. We map out your visit step-by-step so you feel completely safe and ready to get your results.

Before Your Test Starts

Our clinical team checks your health history to set safe limits for your scan. We then place a small IV to give you the imaging fluid and take your resting pictures.

During the Main Scan

Next, we monitor your body while your heart works harder. You will either walk on a treadmill or sit comfortably while taking a safe medicine that mimics a workout.

After You Finish

Once the pictures are done, you can return to your normal routine immediately. The imaging fluid leaves your body naturally, so you just need to stay hydrated.
